The European Union is in talks with satellite operator SES to foster space autonomy and reduce reliance on SpaceX’s Starlink, particularly in light of Ukraine's needs for stable communication. The EU aims to fund EU-based operators to ensure resilient satellite communications, especially if Starlink services falter. SES, already active with about 70 satellites, is positioned to enhance European defense capabilities as nations ramp up space investment. This strategic move seeks to provide alternatives to Starlink while addressing governance and military communication needs across Europe.
Elon Musk is, in fact, the guardian of Ukraine's connectivity on the battlefield. And that's a strategic vulnerability.
Now the discussions are much more strategic in nature... all of the European governments are serious about increasing their defense spending.
The most significant demand (for us) is European nations investing in space, much more than what they did before.
They're much more mid-term, long-term...to augment and complement Starlink.
