In a bid to foster innovation and enhance economic self-reliance, various regions in China are offering significant financial incentives—such as lump sums, monthly allowances, and attractive benefits—to entice PhD holders and skilled workers. This comes amid increasing restrictions from the US on Chinese nationals seeking visas, prompting some researchers to consider returning to China. As highlighted by experts, this trend underscores a fierce competition for talent both within cities and across the nation, reflecting China's broader strategy for bolstering technological capabilities and economic development.
"The competition for talent is intense both across China and within different districts of the same city," says Yanbo Wang, a science-policy researcher at the University of Hong Kong.
"The Trump administration has made that decision much, much easier than ever before," says Wang, regarding US immigration policies impacting Chinese researchers.
