"Victoria Beckham has positioned herself as a pop star, mother, perfumier, TikToker and fashion designer. But whatever job next month's Netflix documentary focuses on details are scant, but it's thought the early October series will end at her Paris catwalk show she will always be scrutinised over how she looks. How to temper that? Wear a plain white shirt. The Princess of Wales visits the Natural History Museum's gardens. Photograph: WPA/Getty"
"Earlier this month, the Duchess of Sussex launched her Netflix series in a white shirt (one of seven in fact), and when Taylor Swift recently announced her new album she did so wearing a white shirt. Laura Dern wore hers twice at the Venice film festival, and the woman with the most enviable wardrobe in fashion Sarah Jessica Parker chose a billowing version to promote her role as Booker prize judge."
Plain white shirts have become a pervasive red carpet and public-appearance staple among celebrities and royals, often styled open-collar and paired with jewelry. Victoria Beckham's documentary poster shows her in an open-collar white shirt and diamond bracelet; the Princess of Wales, the Duchess of Sussex, Taylor Swift, Laura Dern and Sarah Jessica Parker have all recently worn white shirts. Demand for oversized poplin shirts has surged, with With Nothing Underneath growing 130% this year and John Lewis reporting a 33% rise in sales. High-street and designer variations, including open-back and fitted options, are current bestsellers. The shirt returned post-pandemic as a slightly oversized, jacket-free classic.
