Photographer Owen Harvey's latest work, 'Floricienta Flower Boys,' was inspired by a unique, one-day tradition at Mexico City's Mercado de Jamaica flower market. He discovered this annual event coincidentally on the first day of spring, March 21, when men buy flowers for loved ones. Influenced by the television show Floricienta and popularized on TikTok, the event sparked Harvey's interest as he relates it to his ongoing theme of exploring belonging, connecting the ordinary with poignant moments in life, reflecting his experiences with diverse subjects in his photography.
Typically, when creating personal work, the photographer Owen Harvey likes to work over a long period, making in-roads and building relationships.
It was by complete coincidence that this touching annual event was happening, after a short conversation with one of the teenagers, I was told that the craze was initially popularised by the television show Floricienta.
