Banner year for Bay Area talent as region's influence reflected in Oscars nominations
"I come from a community that loves me, that spoke a lot of power into me, a lot of pride into me. I love them back. They made me believe that I could do this. That I could be a writer. Ryan Coogler expressed gratitude for his community's influence on his career while accepting the BAFTA Award for Original Screenplay."
"I got to see 'Sinners' here, when it first came out. When Ryan Coogler came back to show it. So, it's just crazy that my movie now is being played here. Steph Curry reflected on experiencing Coogler's film at Oakland's Grand Lake Theater and the significance of his own movie being shown in the same venue."
The Bay Area is experiencing significant representation at the 98th Academy Awards, with multiple films and creators from the region receiving major nominations. Ryan Coogler, an Oakland native and director of 'Sinners,' earned a BAFTA Award for Original Screenplay and is nominated for Best Director. The vampire thriller 'Sinners' received a record 16 Oscar nominations, making it the most-decorated film from a Black director in BAFTA history. Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who grew up in San Leandro and Danville, is nominated for Best Cinematography and is the first woman of color nominated in this category. Bay Area basketball icon Steph Curry praised Coogler's work and community dedication. Additional Bay Area talent contributed to the film's success, including Oakland native Raph for Best Original Song.
