'He was charismatic, intelligent, intense' - Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda and Meryl Streep lead tributes to Hollywood icon Robert Redford
"The last time I saw him, when he came to lunch, we discussed art and decided to send each other our first drawings. He was one of a kind and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him."
"We were such opposites: he was from the world of horses; I was allergic to them! Yet, we kept trying to find out more about each other, just like the characters in the movie,"
"I can't stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for."
The actor, director and activist was regarded as the godfather of independent cinema. He starred opposite Barbra Streisand in Sydney Pollack's 1973 romantic drama The Way We Were. Streisand described working with him as exciting, intense and pure joy, noted their opposites, and praised him as charismatic and one of the finest actors ever. Meryl Streep starred opposite him in Out Of Africa and Lions For Lambs and paid tribute. Jane Fonda said she couldn’t stop crying and that he stood for an America worth fighting for. He gained acclaim for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and supported independent films as a producer.
