"I said to Neal: 'Are you going to be giving me directions? I'm really down if that's the case - you're a genius,' and he said, 'No, no, no, James. Think of it like this: You're Frank Oz, and I'm making Yoda for you.' This collaborative approach between performer and creature designer proved transformative for the character."
Project Hail Mary directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller initially considered casting a prominent actor to voice Rocky, the alien character who befriends protagonist Ryland Grace. However, the role ultimately went to James Ortiz, an accomplished puppet designer and performer known for his work in theatrical productions. Creature designer Neal Scanlan, who previously worked on Star Wars creatures at Jim Henson's Creature Shop, collaborated with Ortiz to create custom Rocky puppets. Scanlan approached the partnership as a modern parallel to the Frank Oz and Yoda relationship, with Scanlan building the creature specifically around Ortiz's performance capabilities. This collaborative process between performer and creature designer proved essential to bringing Rocky to life authentically.
