Jerome Burns, a Danbury resident, is set to compete in the Nathan's hot dog eating contest on Coney Island. After starting competitive eating in December, he secured a spot in the contest by qualifying with 23 hot dogs at Lake Compounce. Burns aims to improve his personal record, targeting 25 to 30 hot dogs. Meanwhile, veteran competitor Joey Chestnut, a 16-time champion with a record of 76 hot dogs, returns after a ban last year. The men's contest is scheduled for noon on Friday.
Jerome Burns started competitive eating in December and he entered a qualifying competition at Lake Compounce in May. By eating 23 hot dogs, Burns won an at-large bid to compete in the famous Fourth of July contest.
I definitely want to beat my personal record of 23," Burns said. "Twenty-five would be like a low number. Thirty would be absolutely a dream if I could break that 30 mark.
Patrick Bertoletti won by consuming 58 hot dogs. Chestnut's record is 76 hot dogs. He set that record in 2021.
In 2022, he consumed 63 and he ate 62 in 2023, the last year he competed.
