"A panel of 26 judges combed over nearly 1,500 entries and praised work that fostered "connection" and "understanding" and "put readers on the edge of their seats" or were elevated by "smart, agile reportage." The SATW foundation has been rewarding travel journalism work for more that 40 years."

The package explored Heartland foodways, including Vietnamese cuisine in an Iowa factory town, Oklahoma burgers and hot dogs, politicized ice cream sandwiches and sports bars, moonshine in Arkansas's Delta, and advocacy for more Indigenous foods. The package was led by editors Nick Mancall-Bitel and Lesley Suter, designed by Nat Belkov with illustrations by Morgan Thompson, and featured contributors such as Monica Burton, Amy McCarthy, Sean Sherman, and Mecca Bos. A panel of 26 judges reviewed nearly 1,500 entries and praised connection, understanding, excitement, and smart, agile reportage.
