'It was a madhouse': $2 burger spot opens by UC Berkeley to lines down the block
""It was crazy but pretty cool," said co-owner Jim Angelopoulos. "It's nice to see a long line around the block.""
""So far it's been great, especially after the football game the other day," Angelopoulos said. "It was a madhouse. I think in one hour we served 170 people.""
""We're just holding steady as long as we can, and honestly, I don't want to raise the prices," Angelopoulos said. "It's gotten us a lot of attention.""
Campus Burgers opened a Berkeley restaurant two blocks from UC Berkeley and gave away more than 1,600 free smash burgers during the grand opening, prompting long lines. The chain has two other Bay Area locations near university campuses and offers very low prices: $1.99 hamburger, $2.99 cheeseburger and $4.99 double cheeseburger. The model relies on high customer volume to offset small 2-ounce patties and maintain low prices. Rising ground beef costs—$6.63 per pound in August, up over 17% year‑over‑year—strain margins. Two more locations in Gilroy and Santa Cruz are planned.
