"Speed cameras on French roads will be modified throughout 2026 so that they bring back the 'flash' that lets drivers know they have been caught exceeding the speed limit. All drivers will know it - that bright flash that lets you know that a speed camera has caught you going over the speed limit. Except, that has not always been the case in France."
"Cameras in urban areas in the départements of Yvelines in the greater Paris area, Gard n south-east France and Marne in the north-east will once more flash as they photograph speeding drivers. After a month's trial the scheme is due to be rolled out nationally throughout 2026. The initial switch-off was in response to driver complaints, but now, organisations including the motorists' group La Ligue de Défense des Conducteurs point out that flashing radars have their uses; they remind drivers of the speed limit."
France will modify speed cameras throughout 2026 to restore the flash that notifies drivers when they exceed speed limits. Flashes were progressively switched off starting in 2019 after drivers complained of being momentarily blinded. The flash reintroduction will begin in urban areas of the départements of Yvelines, Gard and Marne, with a month-long trial before national rollout during 2026. Motoring groups such as La Ligue de Défense des Conducteurs argue that flashing radars help remind drivers of speed limits, reinforce safer driving habits and immediately indicate radar locations. The return will be gradual, leaving many cameras discrete and some drivers will first learn of an offense by receiving a ticket in the post.
