French ex-senator found guilty of drugging lawmaker
"A French court has found a former senator guilty of drugging a woman lawmaker with ecstasy with intent to sexually assault her, and sentenced him to four years in prison, of which 18 months must be behind bars. The high-profile trial of former senator Joel Guerriau comes months after France was stunned by a case that saw Frenchman Dominique Pelicot jailed for 20 years for repeatedly drugging his then-wife Giselle Pelicot so he and dozens of strangers could rape her."
"Guerriau, 68, has been on trial since Monday for allegedly using synthetic drug MDMA, or ecstasy, to spike a glass of champagne that National Assembly MP Sandrine Josso was drinking in November 2023. Josso said shortly the verdict was a "huge relief". Guerriau's lawyers said he would appeal. French prosecutors had sought a four-year prison sentence for the former senator, who described the drugging of his friend of 10 years as an accident and called himself an "idiot"."
A French court convicted former senator Joel Guerriau of drugging National Assembly MP Sandrine Josso with MDMA and sentenced him to four years in prison, including 18 months to be served behind bars. The alleged incident took place in November 2023 when Guerriau reportedly spiked a glass of champagne Josso drank. Toxicology tests detected a high dose of ecstasy in Josso's blood and ecstasy was found at Guerriau's flat. Josso described feeling unwell with a racing heart and fearing for her life. Guerriau denied sexual motivation, called the incident accidental, resigned from the Senate, and faces an appeal.
