Mayors across France raised Palestinian flags on town halls despite an order from Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau to observe neutrality. France prepared to join other countries in recognising a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly. The Interior Ministry reported 21 town halls had raised the flag, with many more expected. Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure publicly supported the mayors and condemned the ministers stance. Malakoff mayor Jacqueline Belhomme refused a police request to remove the flag and described the removal order as a prefectural coup, likening the gesture to earlier displays of the Ukrainian flag.
