Comedian and TV host W. Kamau Bell recently won a $1 million prize and chose to donate it to DonorsChoose, funding over 200 educational projects in public schools in Oakland, California, and Mobile, Alabama. Bell emphasized the struggle of teachers who often spend their own money for classroom essentials, urging better funding for public education. His generous contribution aims to deliver crucial resources, including books and supplies, to schools facing financial difficulties, particularly in his hometown of Oakland and his father’s birthplace, Mobile.
Most teachers spend money out of their own paycheck to support their students. And so this is a way to say we should stop doing that. Until our country understands that we need to fund public education better, this is one way to do it.
Bell's donation will help provide crucial resources like books, art supplies, and even a refrigerator for a farm-to-fork program.
