HMD and Lava are set to introduce innovative smartphones that can receive broadcast television without internet, utilizing Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology. This will be featured at the WAVES 2025 in Mumbai. Lava's phone will use a UHF antenna for terrestrial TV and will include a dedicated SL3000 chip from Saankhya Labs, powered by a MediaTek MT6261 chip, featuring a 2.8" screen and a 2,200 mAh battery, raising questions about the practicality of its screen size for viewing television content.
The technology called Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) enables smartphones to stream multimedia content by receiving broadcasts directly, eliminating the reliance on cellular or internet connections.
Lava's device will feature an ultra-high-frequency antenna for receiving terrestrial TV broadcasts, complemented by a dedicated chip, making mobile TV more accessible.
