Assassin's Creed Shadows: Claws Of Awaji DLC Review - Same Old, Same Old
"Assassin's Creed has long focused each of its stories on a central theme. Almost every aspect of Odyssey's main campaign and dozens of side quests deal with legacy, for example, while Valhalla's lengthy story largely centers around fate. Assassin's Creed Shadows is far less defined, with protagonists Naoe and Yasuke's journey across 16th-century Japan primarily being about found family, but delving into revenge and honor as well."
"Naoe learns that her mother, who disappeared 14 years earlier, is a member of a group known as the Assassin Brotherhood and is actually still alive. Yasuke discovers the same Templar Order that originally enslaved him has plans for Japan and declares war on them, and both protagonists succeed in only finding two of the three MacGuffins necessary to ensure the protection of the country."
Assassin's Creed Shadows centers on found family through protagonists Naoe and Yasuke, while also touching on revenge and honor. The main campaign lacks a clear thematic focus and suffers from an aimless second act. The base game concludes abruptly with unresolved plotlines: Naoe's missing mother is revealed alive, Yasuke's campaign against Templars remains unfinished, and only two of three protective MacGuffins are obtained. Claws of Awaji takes the pair to Awaji Island and attempts to address those loose ends. The expansion refines the cat-and-mouse target-pursuit loop for more engaging eliminations, but persistent narrative weaknesses leave the DLC ending and Naoe's arc feeling underdeveloped and unrewarding.
