EU countries override France to greenlight Mercosur trade deal
"The approval of the EU-Mercosur Agreement is a milestone in European trade policy and an important signal of our strategic sovereignty and capacity to act,"
"The conclusion of the EU-Mercosur trade deal is great news for Europe's global geopolitical and economic clout,"
A majority of EU member states backed the long-awaited EU-Mercosur trade pact, enabling final signature in Paraguay. The deal creates a free-trade area covering more than 700 million people and removes import tariffs on over 90% of products. Estimated annual savings for EU businesses amount to about four billion euros in duties, while export sectors such as vehicles, machinery, wines and spirits are expected to benefit. The agreement aims to support the EU economy, diversify trade away from reliance on single markets, and strengthen diplomatic ties with Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay. Several EU countries, including France, Ireland, Poland, Hungary and Austria, opposed the pact, while Italy ultimately supported it after a prior delay.
