German business morale sees biggest rise in nearly a year

"This recovery is purely cyclical in nature," Niklasch said. "The tailwinds stem from fiscal policy as well as monetary easing", he added, warning of "structural problems" still facing the German economy."

"US President Donald Trump meanwhile announced a new global tariff of 15 Percent on Saturday after the Supreme Court struck down previously imposed duties, plunging German exporters into fresh uncertainty. "These decisions have created new major uncertainty for transatlantic trade," the head of the BDI industry group Peter Leibinger said Monday. "Companies on both sides of the Atlantic now need certain and reliable conditions for trade," he added."

German business morale improved in February as the Ifo confidence barometer rose one point to 88.6, the largest increase since March 2025. Industrial orders and production showed brighter readings, supporting hopes of an industrial turnaround. Defence-driven fiscal spending contributed to the gains, but economists warned that debt-fuelled measures may have limited long-term impact if they finance routine spending. Analysts described the upswing as cyclical and attributed tailwinds to fiscal policy and monetary easing, while warning of persistent structural problems. New US global tariffs have added uncertainty for German exporters and transatlantic trade conditions.
