Study Shows Hazardous Materials in Headphones Across Europe
"All of the headphones studied contained hazardous substances, including bisphenols, phthalates, and flame retardants. The study notes that these findings do not pose a threat to people using these headphones in the immediate future, but goes on to observe that repeated exposure to the substances mentioned above pose a long-term risk to public health."
"Daily use - especially during exercise when heat and sweat are present - accelerates this migration directly to the skin. Although there is no immediate health risk, long-term exposures, especially vulnerable groups like teenagers, are of great concern. There is no 'safe' level for endocrine disruptors that mimic our natural hormones."
A comprehensive study by nonprofit organization Arnika examined 81 headphones sold across European retailers and online shops. All headphones tested contained hazardous substances including bisphenols, phthalates, and flame retardants. While these substances pose no immediate threat to users, repeated exposure creates long-term public health risks. Daily use, particularly during exercise when heat and sweat accelerate chemical migration to skin, increases exposure. Vulnerable populations like teenagers face particular concern, as endocrine disruptors have no safe exposure level. In response, European retailers have removed affected headphone models from shelves.
