Faculty unions at Rutgers University initiated a strike involving around 9,000 workers due to unsuccessful contract negotiations. The strike occurred on April 12, 2023, at the New Brunswick campus. In January, members of Higher Education Labor United (HELU) aimed to improve working conditions for faculty and staff while enhancing student learning conditions. They created the Amherst Compact, which seeks to coordinate bargaining priorities across the Northeast, promoting solidarity among various job categories and covering nine states, including New Jersey and New York.
