GTA History Class Is Coming To This American College Ahead Of GTA 6's Release
""the class is much more about American history than the games themselves, but GTA provides the framework that structures our exploration of the past," Olsson said. "My hope is that after the class, students will never look at these games, or modern America, the same again.""
""It's probably obvious to many that this drama is an allusion to the LA Riots of April and May 1992, one of the most significant turning points in contemporary U.S. history, but also one that is widely misunderstood," the professor said. "Explaining the origins and meaning of this violent convulsion is a key goal of my class.""
"Olsson is "perhaps most excited to use San Andreas" as a teaching tool from the GTA series, as it's set in a fictional Los Angeles."
""largest game launch in history,""
Classes start in January at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville under the title Grand Theft America: US History Since 1980 through the GTA Video Games. The curriculum uses Grand Theft Auto games as a framework to examine American social, political, and cultural history from 1980 onward. San Andreas will serve as a primary teaching tool to analyze connections to the 1992 Los Angeles Riots and their broader historical significance. Gameplay will be shown during class rather than required purchase to avoid financial burden on students. GTA 6 had been planned for inclusion but was delayed to May 26, 2026. A previous course used Red Dead Redemption to teach U.S. history between 1899 and 1911, and one Canadian university previously offered a GTA-related class.
