The evaluation process focuses on Clusters of Excellence—large-scale research operations involving numerous professors, researchers, and doctoral candidates with substantial infrastructure. Funding ranges from 10 to 28 million annually per institution, with total Excellence Strategy funding reaching 687 million yearly. Baden-Württemberg hosts three of the ten Universities of Excellence, the most of any German state. The University of Tübingen, a University of Excellence since 2012, leads Baden-Württemberg with six clusters of excellence and demonstrates interdisciplinary research strengths in artificial intelligence, medicine, and neuroscience.
