Mark Welsh resigned as president of Texas A&M effective Friday at 5 p.m. after facing pressure from state lawmakers over his handling of a classroom dispute. Welsh had fired English professor Melissa McCoul after a student objected to McCoul's statement that there are more than two genders. Welsh also removed two administrators for having "approved plans to continue teaching course content that was not consistent" with the course description. Lawmakers demanded his termination and conservative figures celebrated. Faculty and the American Association of University Professors criticized the actions as threatening academic freedom and partisan interference.
