Since 2022 colleges and universities have tried to reconcile AI chatbots with liberal-arts education and largely failed. AI-enabled cheating has become widespread across institutional types. Unauthorized AI use erodes individual learning by substituting automated outputs for critical thinking, problem-solving, and study practice, and it harms students who choose not to use AI. Institutional goals suffer because large language models fabricate information and often rely on intellectual-property theft, reducing genuine scholarship and innovation. AI systems impose significant ecological costs and depend on exploitative labor, conflicting with commitments to environmental protection and economic justice.
