Huge shoe found at Roman fort near Hadrian's Wall
Briefly

Footwear measuring 32 cm has been unearthed at Roman fort Magna, possibly the largest in the Vindolanda Trust's extensive collection. The fort, part of a series along Hadrian’s Wall, housed Syrian archers and Dalmatian Mountain troops. Although focused on Vindolanda’s excavation for decades, recent geophysical surveys revealed the site’s potential. Funded by a grant, archaeologists have begun excavating the fort to recover artifacts threatened by climate change, as drying wetlands endanger organic remnants. The initial findings include well-preserved shoes, indicating Magna's rich archaeological value and shedding light on military footwear design.
The discovery of a remarkably large shoe at the Roman fort of Magna illustrates the ongoing significance of archaeological research in understanding ancient military life.
Recent excavations at Magna reveal that this lesser-known Roman fort may prove as rich in historical artifacts as its larger neighbor, Vindolanda.
