The Ulbster 2 Stone, a newly discovered Pictish carved stone, was unveiled at the North Coast Visitor Centre in Thurso, following its recovery from St Martin's Burial Ground in Ulbster, Scotland. It features visible Pictish symbols like the double disc and Z-rod despite its weathered state. The unveiling was attended by local officials and aimed to enhance public understanding of Pictish artefacts. Local heritage group Yarrows Heritage SCIO facilitated the stone's preservation after a tip from community member Fiona Begg Wade. This Class 1 stone dates from the 6th to 8th century.
When my ancestor moved the Ulbster Stone to Thurso Castle he had no idea of its historical importance. Today, thanks to the excellent work of all involved, a sister stone has been recovered and restored which adds to the greater understanding we now have of these amazing artefacts.
The recovery was made possible through the efforts of local heritage group Yarrows Heritage SCIO, following a tip-off by Fiona Begg Wade, who noticed the carved markings while tending the burial ground where some of her relatives are buried.
