Germany: Police dismantle major cyberattack 'botnets'
"The so-called botnets, made up of millions of infected devices, were used for large-scale Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that can overwhelm entire websites and online services."
"Aisuru is believed to have relied on compromised IoT devices such as routers and webcams, while Kimwolf mainly used infected Android TV boxes."
"Hackers can hijack internet-connected devices like smart TVs, routers, and webcams and use them in cyberattacks without owners knowing."
Investigators collaborated with U.S. and Canadian partners to dismantle the Aisuru and Kimwolf botnets, which utilized millions of compromised devices for DDoS attacks. The Central Office for Combating Cybercrime in North Rhine-Westphalia and Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office reported the shutdown of infrastructure linked to these networks. Two suspected administrators were identified, leading to searches in Germany and Canada, resulting in the seizure of evidence, including data storage devices and cryptocurrencies. Aisuru primarily used compromised IoT devices, while Kimwolf targeted infected Android TV boxes.
