Giro d'Italia: Arrieta wins stage despite wrong turn as Eulalio takes maglia rosa
"I'm really, really happy to achieve this victory, it means a lot for me, because of the crash [on stage two] and all the teammates who went home, Arrieta said. Thursday's sixth stage is a 142km ride from Paestum to Napoli passing near Mount Vesuvius."
Afonso Eulalio seized the overall lead in Giro d’Italia after stage five, but Igor Arrieta won the stage in wet conditions. Arrieta and Eulalio rode together near the summit of the Montagna Grande di Viggiano climb, and Arrieta appeared to have taken the win after Eulalio slid to the tarmac with about 7km remaining. Arrieta had to recover after a wrong turn and later caught Eulalio, but Eulalio could not respond on the final uphill drag. Arrieta also crashed 13.5km from the end during a cold, rain-drenched day. Giulio Ciccone finished seven minutes down and dropped to sixth overall. Eulalio leads the general classification by 2min 51sec over Arrieta, with Christian Scaroni third. Arrieta’s win provided a boost after teammates were lost following a major pile-up on stage two. Stage six runs from Paestum to Napoli near Mount Vesuvius.
