Smith returned briefly but felt persistent discomfort and was scratched from a subsequent lineup. Manager Dave Roberts reported swelling has dissipated and tests returned negative, but Smith is not yet at full strength. Rookie Dalton Rushing is already on the injured list with a shin contusion, elevating Ben Rortvedt and Triple-A catcher Chuckie Robinson as the primary options. Robinson has not appeared in the majors this season but is producing at Triple-A.
