Los Angeles's Oldest, Most Iconic French Restaurant to Close in March
"March 29 will mark the end of a long era for classic French cuisine in an Echo Park historic building, as well as the beginning of construction for a forthcoming multi-use building on Sunset Boulevard. Taix first opened in Los Angeles in 1927 before settling into its present structure with a banquet hall, multiple dining rooms, and an expansive lounge in 1962, one block away from Echo Park Lake."
"Since 2019, questions have surrounded Taix's future. That year, owner Mike Taix told employees that his family sold the property as part of redevelopment and promised to retain key parts of the restaurant. Though the restaurant was designated a historic monument in 2021, the classification did not protect the building from demolition. The Eastsider also confirmed that the Holland Partner Group will build a six-story complex comprising 166 housing units and a massive retail space on the ground floor, and offer 24 low-income residential units."
Taix French Restaurant will close permanently on March 29, ending a century-long run in Echo Park. Taix opened in 1927 and occupied its current 1962 building with a banquet hall, multiple dining rooms, and an expansive lounge near Echo Park Lake. The property sold for redevelopment in 2019; a 2021 historic designation did not prevent demolition. Holland Partner Group will build a six-story complex with 166 housing units, ground-floor retail, and 24 low-income units, and plans to include a new Taix with a patio when construction finishes in slightly under four years. Padma Lakshmi will host America's Culinary Cup; NORMS introduced themed menu items; Chef Gian Scott joins Mayday Market.
