As they turn to food banks, those nonprofits will be left wondering how to provide for the sudden influx of people needing aid."
"It's not just young families with children. One of the things that may be assumed is that these are individuals who aren't working, who aren't trying to contribute. The reality is most of the people who use it are either elderly or are working and just don't have enough to make it through the month."
SNAP, the largest U.S. anti-hunger program, will run out of funds on November 1, leaving over 42 million people without benefits and driving increased reliance on food banks. LGBTQ+ community centers and nonprofit pantries expect a sharp rise in demand and face resource strain. The LGBT Life Center's Pride Pantries already serve roughly 650 households monthly and distributed about 285,000 pounds of food in 2024, with numbers likely rising. About 15 percent of LGBTQ+ adults received SNAP last year, including 250,000 transgender people and 1.3 million lesbian and bisexual women; many recipients have low incomes, disabilities, or children.
