"The acceptance and love I discovered here was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. I felt safe. I felt seen. I felt at home. By the time her family found out that she is bi, she had enough support and strength that she took the brunt of their disapproval and gave it back."
"A few years later, she started to realize that she is trans. But the experience of finding community from when she learned to accept her bisexuality served her well: This time, I didn't hide. I immediately embraced that side of me."
Van grew up in a homophobic environment where her family was unsupportive of LGBTQ+ identities. When she moved out in 2017, she discovered freedom to explore her attraction to all genders. She immersed herself in LGBTQ+ community spaces, wearing Pride patches and attending events, where she found acceptance and safety. When her family discovered her bisexuality, she had built enough community support to withstand their disapproval. Years later, recognizing her trans identity, Van applied this experience and immediately embraced that aspect of herself without hiding. Today, she is engaged to a same-sex partner and credits the LGBTQ+ community with providing the strength to live authentically.
