Liberal Democrat members voted against an amendment that would have replaced gender-based quotas with quotas based on biological sex, preventing trans women from standing for roles reserved for women. The motion was proposed by Liberal Voice for Women at the party conference in Bournemouth and referenced a recent UK Supreme Court ruling on the Equality Act. The party constitution currently requires that at least 40% of federal bodies and committees self-identify across genders. LGBT+ Liberal Democrats and other members criticised the amendment as a sham and warned against using the conference to legitimise transphobic views.
