Two gay men arrested by Iran's Islamic religious police in 2021 were convicted of "homosexual activity" and released pending sentencing. The men fled Iran and entered the U.S. southern border in January 2025 seeking asylum. The men have remained in detention since entry and lacked legal representation at hearings in late April and early May, during which their claims were denied amid reported bias and violations of due process. Deportation to Iran has been scheduled three times but has not yet occurred. Homosexuality is punishable by death in Iran, creating a credible risk; one man repeatedly calls begging for help.
