Monica Helms, the creator of the transgender Pride flag and a US Navy veteran, plans to leave Marietta, Georgia with her wife because of increasing anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and laws. The couple intends to relocate to Costa Rica and said they will continue their activism there and help others who want to move. Since 2023, US state legislatures proposed at least 1,647 anti-LGBTQ+ bills, with 604 proposed since January 2025. Georgia lawmakers proposed 32 anti-LGBTQ+ laws since 2023; four passed and one is being challenged. An executive order banning gender-affirming care for under-19s led CHLA to close its trans youth program.
