"Don't ever think that I'm gonna give you my money that I work hard for."
"California law prohibits awarding damages without an underlying finding of liability,"
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge overturned a jury verdict that had ordered attorney Mark Geragos to pay $100,000 to youth basketball coach Gary Franklin for Geragos' alleged role in a 2018 scheme to extort money from Nike. Franklin alleged that Geragos and disbarred lawyer Michael Avenatti derailed a potential $1.5 million settlement by threatening to reveal misconduct unless Nike hired them. Avenatti is in prison; Geragos was never charged but was briefly considered an unindicted co-conspirator. The trial jury found aiding and abetting and breach of duties yet found no substantial harm, and the judge entered judgment for Geragos.
