Separately, Merriman had chatted online to a genuine paedophile, known by the alias Granddad', in which he shared his fantasies of drugging children so he could sexually assault and rape them. "You are plainly a deeply entrenched, predatory and highly manipulative paedophile, said the judge. You tactically admitted that which you had no choice about during your trial - your sexual attraction to children - but sought artfully, convincingly and at length over many hours in the witness box, to spin a lie that you would not act on this. Your convictionshows otherwise."
Adam Merriman, 38, a former Metropolitan Police constable, committed repeated sexual abuses of children and used his role to facilitate offences. He downloaded and distributed indecent images, unknowingly to an undercover officer, and exchanged online fantasies with a paedophile known as "Granddad'", including plans to drug children to sexually assault and rape them. Merriman resigned from the force after admitting six charges of making and distributing indecent images and was later convicted at trial of multiple counts of sexual abuse. The court imposed a nine-year prison term plus five years on licence, citing significant ongoing risk. Reporting restrictions were lifted after 18 months.
