After spending four years in prison, four pro-democracy lawmakers from the Hong Kong 47 group have been released. These lawmakers, Claudia Mo, Kwok Ka-ki, Jeremy Tam, and Gary Fan, were part of those convicted in what is considered a politically motivated national security trial. They were arrested during a widespread crackdown on democracy following the 2019 protests. A total of 45 of the 47 were convicted, and only two were acquitted after being charged under the controversial national security law imposed by China, which has drastically curtailed democratic freedoms in Hong Kong.
The prosecution depicted the activists as a threat intending to cripple Hong Kong's governance through a significant electoral success that would force the city's leadership to resign.
Under the national security law imposed by Beijing, the Hong Kong 47 received politically motivated prosecutions, marking a significant moment in the territory's crackdown on opposition.
