"It's quite a devastating attack on the infrastructure of the country, both in terms of the state infrastructure and civilian infrastructure. Far from leading to a popular uprising against the government, as President Trump has encouraged, the U.S.-Israeli attacks have forced Iranians to worry about their immediate safety from the bombs."
"These attacks are causing much suffering for Iranian people, and it's destroying the space in which Iranians were struggling for social justice and civil liberties. I'm very pessimistic about the possibility of a regime change in Iran without having a clear idea of what is going to replace it."
A U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran has entered its third day, resulting in over 550 deaths according to the Iranian Red Crescent Society and extensive destruction of state and civilian infrastructure. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top officials have been assassinated. Rather than sparking popular uprising against the Iranian government as U.S. officials anticipated, the attacks have forced Iranians to prioritize immediate survival and safety. Iranian scholars note the bombing campaign is destroying space for civil liberties activism and social justice movements. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone strikes against Israel and U.S. allies throughout the Middle East, including the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Cyprus. Fighting has resumed between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, expanding regional conflict.
