'A Tube strike makes the whole city inaccessible'
"When the strikes have already got on everyone's nerves, people don't have the patience to move out of my way or let the driver put the ramp down to let me on."
"one of the most accessible bus networks in the world"
"Leaving the house as a young female wheelchair user is already a scary task at the best of times. I have been grabbed in public and people have started pushing my wheelchair without consent,"
Tube strikes and reduced services have significantly worsened mobility for wheelchair users in London. Dance teacher and access consultant Katie McConnell uses a wheelchair and experiences much longer, riskier commutes during strike periods. Bus drivers have driven past despite available wheelchair spaces and legal duties require drivers to assist boarding and alighting. Transport for London claims one of the most accessible bus networks in the world, yet practice during strikes can leave drivers without time or patience to enforce access rules. Commute times can rise from 25 minutes to over two hours, forcing sacrifice of rest time and exposing chronic health vulnerabilities. Overcrowding, high taxi demand and cost, and lack of alternatives lead many passengers with health concerns to avoid travel.
