Deep below London, HS2's twin tunnels advance towards Euston station
"Both TBMs are currently progressing at speeds of up to 150 metres per week as they carve their way through the London clay and head towards passing under residential neighbourhoods."
"Madeleine is expected to pass under Chamberlayne Road in Kensal Green by mid-July, before passing under Kilburn High Road in early September."
"The tunnels in this section are being constructed at depths of between 35 and 40 metres below ground level, helping to minimise disruption at the surface as the machines pass beneath homes, roads and existing railway lines."
"HS2 says the pair are on schedule to complete their journeys towards Euston by late June 2027."
HS2 has reported significant progress on twin-bore tunnels under northwest London. TBM Madeleine and TBM Karen were launched in January and March 2026, respectively. Both machines are boring tunnels towards Euston at speeds of up to 150 metres per week. TBM Madeleine is currently passing under the Grand Union Canal, while TBM Karen follows closely behind. The tunnels are being constructed at depths of 35 to 40 metres to minimize surface disruption. Completion is expected by late June 2027, with a cavern to be constructed at the end of the tunnel for railway crossings.
