London's Alleys: Footpath to Kensington Court, W8
Briefly

The passage off Kensington High Street has a seemingly unremarkable facade but is historically significant as the location of one of London's first electricity generating power plants constructed by Rooke Evelyn Bell Crompton in 1886. Initially occupied by two mansion houses, the area underwent a transformation initiated by Crompton, who foresaw the potential of electricity. The power plant ceased operations in 1900 and later transformed into offices in 1985, with a blue plaque erected to honor Crompton's contributions to electric lighting.
The Electric Lighting Station at 46 Kensington Court was one of London’s earliest power plants, built by pioneering investor Rooke Evelyn Bell Crompton in 1886.
Although not grand in appearance, the street played a crucial role in the advent of electricity, marking a significant turning point in Kensington's development.
