Platform 37: Google names its huge King's Cross HQ as staff prepare to move in
"Designed by architects Thomas Heatherwick and Bjarke Ingels, the nearly completed building will be called Platform 37, which Google says reflects its location beside the station. The 37 refers to an innovative 37th move in a world-famous game of Go between DeepMind's AI system AlphaGo and the top Go player Lee Sedol."
"For staff working inside, one architectural feature is its unusual suspended structure, which creates large, column-free interior spaces. This layout allows office areas to be reconfigured over time as the workforce's needs change."
"As well as office space for Google staff, the ground floor will include a publicly accessible area to be known as The AI Exchange, which will host exhibitions, talks and educational events."
Google's new office building, Platform 37, is finally opening at King's Cross station after a decade of construction. Designed by architects Thomas Heatherwick and Bjarke Ingels, the building features an innovative suspended structure creating large column-free interior spaces that can be reconfigured as needs change. The name Platform 37 references both the station location and an iconic 37th move in a historic AlphaGo versus Lee Sedol Go match. The ground floor includes The AI Exchange, a publicly accessible area for exhibitions and educational events. A landscaped rooftop garden was created in partnership with local organizations including the London Wildlife Trust. Google staff will begin occupying the building later this year, making it Google's largest office outside the United States.
