Tickets Alert: Tours of Dorneywood House and its gardens
"Dorneywood House is the less famous of the three grand estates used by government ministers, after Chequers and Chevening House, and is also the only one that the public can visit. You can visit the gardens at Chevening House, or walk past Chequers, but only Dorneywood House lets you inside the house as well."
"A visit to Dorneywood House is to go in through a side gate in the field next to the house, and you can take in the well-maintained gardens, and a tour of the ground floor of the house, which is richly decorated while still managing to retain the air of an oversized cottage rather than a stately home."
"The gardens are open during the summer, but tours of the house are available for just two weeks, and tickets sell out very quickly."
Dorneywood House is one of three grand estates used by government ministers, located outside London. Unlike Chequers and Chevening House, Dorneywood uniquely permits public access to both its interior and grounds. The house maintains a cottage-like character despite its grandeur and rich decoration. Public visits occur during summer months, limited to two-week periods with tours restricted to the ground floor. Visitors enter through a side gate, explore well-maintained gardens, and receive tea and cakes afterward. Currently occupied by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, the property is accessible by car with on-site parking or by public transport via Burnham station on the Elizabeth line, followed by a 50-minute walk or local taxi service.
