You can see six incredible plays at the Barbican for free this month - and you'll be the only audience member
"Theatre for One is the brainchild of Christine Jones, artistic director of Ireland's Landmark Productions and some very big name writing talent is involved, including Enda Walsh and Marina Carr, two of the Emerald Isle's biggest playwrights."
"you'll go along to the big booth in the foyer, join the queue (if there is one) and when it's your turn you'll sit down, the door will close, and a screen in the middle of the booth will slide back revealing an actor, who will perform one of six plays to you at random."
"One thing that's worth stressing: it is very intense being in a booth with a single actor who is talking directly to you, and you alone. The vibes are absolutely not 'sure, check your phone during the show, nobody will notice'"
The Barbican Centre's main theatre is closed for renovation, but the venue has launched Scene Change, a season featuring theatre in alternative spaces. Theatre for One, created by Christine Jones of Ireland's Landmark Productions, presents six new Irish plays written by acclaimed playwrights including Enda Walsh and Marina Carr. Audience members enter a booth in the foyer, sit alone, and watch a randomly selected five-minute play performed live by an actor directly to them. The plays vary in style from naturalistic drama to comedy to magical realism. The intimate setting creates an intense experience where full attention is required, as the actor performs exclusively for one viewer at a time.
