Ambulance driver praised for confronting knifeman
"It was a kitchen knife but the biggest I've ever seen. I called for police on my radio and told him to stay back. He then turned and kicked the door of the house open."
"I told him my name, he told me his, I was trying to build a rapport. At the time I didn't really process the danger I was in."
"Luke's actions were exceptionally brave and he showed remarkable presence of mind in an extremely dangerous situation."
Luke Rapela, a London Ambulance Service worker, intervened to protect two women from a knifeman in Battersea. After one woman ran into the road screaming, Rapela stopped his ambulance and confronted the armed man. He chased the knifeman into a house to protect another woman and managed to calm him until police arrived. Rapela's actions earned him a chief executive's commendation for his bravery and commitment, despite the inherent dangers of the situation. He aims to train as a paramedic through the service's apprenticeship scheme.
