In a significant policy shift, Leicestershire County Council's new Reform leadership has eliminated the existing flag flying policy in its inaugural cabinet meeting. The decision, led by council leader Dan Harrison, stops the display of flags supporting events like LGBTQ+ Pride Month and Windrush Day outside County Hall. Harrison justifies this move as a way to focus on celebrating British values and national identity. The reassigned flag poles will display the Union flag and other designated flags, with decisions for additional flags now falling to the council's chief executive. Concerns have emerged from staff groups over inclusivity.
Harrison described the eight-minute cabinet meeting, which had only the flag-flying policy on the agenda, as 'historic'. He said: 'People will rightly ask why are we changing this protocol... celebrate British values [which] is what unites us all.'
