Government bags 200 bids from local authorities wanting AI growth zones in their areas | Computer Weekly
Briefly

The UK government has received over 200 expressions of interest from local councils to establish artificial intelligence (AI) growth zones, intended to foster infrastructure for AI development. The Culham site in Oxfordshire will serve as the inaugural zone, focusing on sustainable energy solutions for AI datacentres. The initiative, part of the government's AI Opportunities Action Plan, aims to design areas with expedited planning and significant power access, particularly in redevelopable, de-industrialised regions. A stakeholders' event is scheduled for April 30, 2025, to deliberate proposals from local authorities.
The AI growth zones initiative, aimed at making AI technologies more pervasive across the UK, seeks sites with strong power connections and fast-tracked planning approvals.
Local councils were asked in February to express interest in AI growth zones, with over 200 responses demonstrating significant local engagement in AI infrastructure development.
