"This funding will replace polluting diesel buses with new electric vehicles that will make a real difference to people's daily lives, better connecting them to work, to healthcare and to opportunity, whilst cleaning up the air we all breathe."
Sheffield is receiving £92.7 million in investment to introduce 186 electric buses to its public transport network. The funding comprises £33.4 million from the UK government and £58.3 million from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, with an additional £26 million allocated for infrastructure upgrades and depot preparation. This investment aligns with South Yorkshire's transition to a franchised bus system beginning September 2027, where local authorities will control routes, timetables, and fares. The deployment represents part of the broader Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas programme, which has facilitated the introduction of over 2,500 zero-emission buses across England. Sheffield's first electric buses arrived in 2023, and this expansion continues the city's commitment to reducing emissions and improving air quality.
