Medellin's sublime return to nature in pictures
Briefly

Over the past decade, Medellin, Colombia, has implemented a transformative renaturalization plan to restore its urban spaces. Initiatives since 2016 aimed at greening the city include creating interconnected green corridors, bike paths, and parks, successfully lowering temperatures by 5°F. This effort reduces urban heat, enhances air quality, and fosters biodiversity. The local population feels connected to these green initiatives, taking pride in their upkeep. Green roofs and vertical gardens are also integrated into buildings to further combat heat. Overall, the city's forward-thinking approach has rejuvenated the urban environment and increased wildlife presence.
Residents of Medellin feel that greenery is an important part of our landscape,' said Marcela Norena Restrepo, the city's secretary of environment. There's a sense of ownership. People take better care of the spaces where there's greenery.
With more greenery, we have more wildlife,' Norena Restrepo said. Butterflies are coming, little birds are coming.
